What characteristics do you use to select your breeding stock?
The strongest overwintered bees from the hives with the best mite control. Also, This spring my hives were looking way too plentiful to risk them swarming early. That being said, the weather was a little too spotty to do walk away splits. As a result I bought 6 inspected, marked yellow, hygienic, Italian queens from a Hawaiian breeder via Dave Anthony of AWS bees. I did splits April 4th and all are now exploding in the Nucs I split them in. These are the nucs I have for sale.I would also consider selling one of my other 8 hives (10 frame deeps). I am moving and can't take them all. |

Where is the source of your bees and what strain(s) are they?
apiary consists of 1 original package of bees from northern California (3 years ago), and the rest are swarms, cut outs or splits from within my own apiary. The original package was carnelians but I think I now pretty much have just Italians. To be brutally honest, I have no clue what strains most of my bees are due to the fact they are mainly from MICHIGAN swarms etc.

Where do the bees overwinter?
Kalamazoo Michigan | |
Do the bees spend the whole season in your home location? If not, where do they go and when, and for how long?
They spend the whole year in one spot near my house
Do you monitor for varroa mites? How and how often?
When I check I use powdered sugar roll, but I empirically stick to my treatment plan of breaks in the brood cycle, drone comb harvesting, MAQS and OA no matter the counts. I stick to the mantra that once there are too many mites, it's too late to treat.
Have your hives been inspected by an inspector?
Nope, but whenever I import queens I make sure they are inspected
Anything else? | |
Spring has come early this year and we did splits of our over wintered Michigan bees April 4th! As a result we have 6 roaring honeybee nucs available for sale. Each Nucleus hive is on deep equipment with 4 frames of bees, at least 3 frames of brood in various stages of development, 1 frame of pollen and 1 frame of honey. Each hive has a yellow marked hygienic Italian mated queen who has been laying since April 5th. Brood is hatching and they are ready to explode with this plentiful early nectar flow. The sooner we move them into larger equipment the better.
I am not a commercial bee keeper and strive to keep mite counts to a minimum through natural methods. Each Nuc will be provided in a reusable wax coated cardboard nuc box or feel free to bring your own equipment. No frame exchange necessary unless looking for a discount. These nucs can easily be used to start your own beehive or restart your hive that didn't make it through the winter. Don't waste time waiting for a package to get up to speed when you can be gathering honey tomorrow. I have only 6 nucs available for sale and they are available immediately until they are gone. |
