What characteristics do you use to select your breeding stock? | |
Temperament, VSH, overwintering qualities/frugality on resources during winter months. | |
Where is the source of your bees and what strain(s) are they? | |
Started with some Carniolans from the Sue Cobey project, sprinkled in some from Mike Palmer and used my own stock. I run about 50 colonies give or take. | |

Do the bees spend the whole season in your home location? If not, where do they go and when, and for how long? | |
I have 5 farm locations all in my hometown of Dartmouth Mass but all at least 5 miles apart from each other. | |
Do you monitor for varroa mites? How and how often? | |
Yes, we do alcohol washes in spring and generally monthly during the season. Apiguard after the honey supers are pulled in July, they I hit them with 3 applications of OAV when they are broodless from December through January. | |
Have your hives been inspected by an inspector? | |
Not recently. Once I sell nucs I will have the State inspector Paul Tessier come out and do an inspection. | |
