What characteristics do you use to select your breeding stock?
Temperament, VSH, overwintering qualities/frugality on resources during winter months.
Where is the source of your bees and what strain(s) are they?
Started with some Carniolans from the Sue Cobey project, sprinkled in some from Mike Palmer and used my own stock. I run about 50 colonies give or take.
Where do the bees overwinter?
All in Massachusetts
Do the bees spend the whole season in your home location? If not, where do they go and when, and for how long?
I have 5 farm locations all in my hometown of Dartmouth Mass but all at least 5 miles apart from each other.
Do you monitor for varroa mites? How and how often?
Yes, we do alcohol washes in spring and generally monthly during the season. Apiguard after the honey supers are pulled in July, they I hit them with 3 applications of OAV when they are broodless from December through January.
Have your hives been inspected by an inspector?
Not recently. Once I sell nucs I will have the State inspector Paul Tessier come out and do an inspection.
