What characteristics do you use to select your breeding stock?
We offer a number of different NUCs. we can offer VSH queens in proven NUCs or we have some survivor NUCs made from splits of hives that have gone through at least 2 winters.
Where is the source of your bees and what strain(s) are they?
Are bees are either Italian or Michigan Mutts. Our hives have been in place for about 10 years so the original subspecies of these hives is pretty irrelevant at this point.
Where do the bees overwinter?
All of our hives are overwintered in Michigan. We do use some VSH queens that are sourced out of California.
Do the bees spend the whole season in your home location? If not, where do they go and when, and for how long?
Our hives are not used for pollination. They do NOT travel.
Do you monitor for varroa mites? How and how often?
We use sticky boards to monitor for mites. This is done on an as needed basis throughout the summer. We focus on making our hives as tough and varroa resistant as possible. We actively use IPM techniques throughout the year. We only treat once a year in the late summer/early fall with Apiguard. Our VSH queens come from a source that does not treat at all. |
|
Have your hives been inspected by an inspector?
No | |
Anything else? (e.g. describe your operation)
We have a limited number of NUCs available each spring. We do focus on new beekeepers and provide a special program focussed on getting their hives through the first winter. |
