What characteristics do you use to select your breeding stock?
We select our breed stock based on a combination of brood pattern, hive strength and honey production. We always consider the aggressiveness of a colony and do not sell from aggressive colonies unless requested.
Where is the source of your bees and what strain(s) are they?
Our nucs are made from our bee stock. Our stock is from Michigan mutts of Italian/Carnelian base.
Where do the bees overwinter?
Our bees are currently overwintering in SW Missouri.
Do the bees spend the whole season in your home location? If not, where do they go and when, and for how long?
This winter we took our bees to Reeds, Missouri. They will be there from mid October until early April.
Do you monitor for varroa mites? How and how often?
Our mite control program is to test for mite three times per year (summer, last summer and fall) and treat four times per year. They get an April treatment without testing. If we should ever get 100% zero mite test we would skip the treatment.
Have your hives been inspected by an inspector?
No | |
Anything else? | |
We, as of now do not graft our queens. We do buy them from a local queen supplier. |
