What characteristics do you use to select your breeding stock?
Winter hardiness, varroa resistance, honey production and temperament.
Where is the source of your bees and what strain(s) are they?
Locally bred winter hardy bees. Some Carniolan, Russian and Polish genetics.
Where do the bees overwinter?
Northern Rice and Southern Dakota Counties, Minnesota.
Do the bees spend the whole season in your home location? If not, where do they go and when, and for how long?
Yes, the bees live in Minnesota year round.
Do you monitor for varroa mites? How and how often?
Yes, we monitor varroa levels throughout the season. We currently test once in May, once in June, take July off and then test bi-weekly Aug through Mid-September or until we are confident that our bees will be healthy going into winter.
Have your hives been inspected by an inspector?
No, Minnesota does not require apiary inspections. We consult with a local honey bee veterinarian when we need an expert diagnosis. |
