What characteristics do you use to select your breeding stock?
Overwintering success, queen longevity, temperament, overall hive strength and productivity
Where is the source of your bees and what strain(s) are they?
At this point, they are mutts. Haven't purchased bees in 6 years. However, 3 years ago I bought 2 queens, from Mike Sauter, descended from Dorothy Morgan's "ankle biter" stock. Split and grafted from their colonies every year. Both of those original queens are still alive.
Where do the bees overwinter?
Michigan, southern Lapeer County
Do the bees spend the whole season in your home location? If not, where do they go and when, and for how long?
Yes | |
Do you monitor for varroa mites? How and how often?
Yes. Alcohol wash method. The apiary is over 50 colonies so I test a sample late spring and late summer.
Have your hives been inspected by an inspector?
No | |
Anything else? (e.g. describe your operation)
6 years ago I purchased 16 nucs from Nina Bagley, out of Columbus, OH. Among those colonies were a variety of queen breeds that I didn't have the good sense to track at that time, but they included Saskatraz, Italian and Buckfast. I haven't bought bees since that purchase. Overwinter rates these last 4 years have been 90-100%. 55 colony operation is in rural southern Lapeer County. |
