What characteristics do you use to select your breeding stock?
Gentleness: Beekeepers prefer bees that are less aggressive and more gentle, making hive management and inspection tasks more manageable.

Productivity: High honey production is a desirable trait, and beekeepers often select breeding stock that has a history of strong nectar-gathering and honey-producing abilities.

Disease Resistance: Selecting bees with resistance to common diseases and pests, such as Varroa mites and Nosema, is crucial for maintaining healthy and robust colonies.

Hygienic Behavior: Bees that exhibit hygienic behavior, such as the ability to detect and remove diseased or dead brood, contribute to overall hive health and disease resistance.

Brood Pattern: Beekeepers look for colonies with consistent and well-defined brood patterns, as this is an indicator of a healthy and productive queen.

Overwintering Ability: Bees that can survive and thrive during the winter months are valuable for maintaining colony strength and longevity.

Swarm Resistance: Selecting breeding stock with reduced swarm tendencies helps in maintaining colony stability and preventing the loss of valuable workers.

Varroa Sensitivity: Bees that demonstrate grooming behavior to remove Varroa mites or have traits associated with Varroa-sensitive hygiene contribute to mite resistance.

Genetic Diversity: Maintaining genetic diversity is crucial for the overall health and adaptability of the bee population. Beekeepers may select breeding stock from diverse genetic backgrounds.

Where is the source of your bees and what strain(s) are they?
We collaborate with multiple breeding populations to sustain and generate three strains: VSH Italian (Allegro), VSH Carniolan (Spartan), and VSH Pol-line 2.2.
