Where is the source of your bees and what strain(s) are they? | |
Our bees are Michigan bees that stay in Michigan year-round. We raise our queens from our overwintered stock. We select for gentleness, productivity, disease resistance, hardiness, and ability to overwinter. In 2023, we added genetics to our apiaries from Stevens Bee Company, Harbo Bee Company, and VP Pol-Line 2.2. These genetics were specifically selected for their mite resistance characteristics (Suppressed Mite Reproduction (SMR) and Varroa Sensitive Hygiene (VSH)). Moving forward, we will use the Harbo Assay to continue to select for mite resistance within our stock.
Our queens are open-mated in our apiaries, therefore, we do not claim them to be any specific race or subspecies. Instead, they are hybrids of the local bees that are surviving in our area. These bees are often referred to as "Michigan Mutts." All queens will come marked. |
