What characteristics do you use to select your breeding stock?
Queens (and Drones) are selected for:
Gentleness
Overwinter survival in Northern New Jersey
Early Spring buildup
Mite Resistance
Disease Resistance
Honey Production
Where is the source of your bees and what strain(s) are they?
Mother queens have overwintered typically for at least one winter locally.
Traits include Hygenic, VSH and Mite Biting.
The strain is mixed, primarily Carniolan and Italian. They are “American” bees.
Where do the bees overwinter?
The bees all overwinter in Northern New Jersey.
Do the bees spend the whole season in the North? If not, where do they go and when, and for how long?
The bees are permanently located in Northern New Jersey.
Do you monitor for varroa mites? How and how often?
All colonies in all apiaries are monitored to mites monthly. The colonies are only treated if needed. Mite monitoring is performed after treatment to verify treatment effectiveness.
Have your hives been inspected by an inspector?
Yes, Inspected annually by the NJ State Apiarist.

The stock is continuously improved to increase resistance and tolerance to mites and diseases while maintaining the gentle and productive traits.
