What characteristics do you use to select your breeding stock?
The first and most important thing I look for in breeder queens, is their ability to overwinter here in Minnesota. We need bees here that can take the bitter cold and come out healthy and strong in the spring. Usually I am grafting from queens that have overwintered twice, but sometimes we get that long-lived queen that is productive through 3 winters. I want as many of these around as possible! The next characteristics I'm looking for are these: good honey production, gentleness (not stingy), calmness on the combs (not running around like their hair's on fire) and low mite counts (checked at least twice per year). |

Where is the source of your bees and what strain(s) are they?
I started with MN Hygenic and Carniolan queens and have been propagating from my best colonies for several years now. I've also purchased local queens from others here on the network and swapped queens with other local MN beekeepers. I'm more interested in bees that perform and survive, than in a specific coloring or strain of bee. |

Where do the bees overwinter?
The bees stay here in Minnesota all year, approximately 45 minutes northwest of Minneapolis.
Do the bees spend the whole season in your home location? If not, where do they go and when, and for how long?
Yes, my bees are here all year long. I do not move them for pollination purposes.
Do you monitor for varroa mites? How and how often?
Yes. I use an alcohol wash. Once near end of May and again beginning of August. If/when I treat in August, I re-check in September.
Have your hives been inspected by an inspector?
MN has no apiary inspection program. |
