What characteristics do you use to select your breeding stock? |
In order of priority, I look for overwintering ability, quality of brood, honey production, and whether the colony can keep low mite loads without chemical treatment (I do monitor every colony individually for mites, and treat if need be with organic acids). |
Where is the source of your bees and what strain(s) are they? |
My bees come from Kirk Webster's stock in VT. The bees I breed with are descended from queens kept year-round in VT for decades. They are a mix of Russian, Carniolan, and VT survivor stock. |
Where do the bees overwinter? |
My bees overwinter outside in Marquette and Alger Counties, MI |
Do the bees spend the whole season in your home location? If not, where do they go and when, and for how long? |
My bees spend all season in Marquette and Alger Counties, MI |
Do you monitor for varroa mites? How and how often? |
Yes, Once in July and August, and I test potential breeder queens in May. |
Have your hives been inspected by an inspector? |
Not yet, hopefully soon in the future. |
