If "Other" please explain
I also provide Northern bee package by request in late April and May. These are shaken off of my stronger colonies to help prevent swarming. I also hope to be able to offer I.I. Queens in the near future.
What characteristics do you use to select your breeding stock?
1. Mite resistance 2. Over-wintering 3. Honey production 4. Gentleness |
|
Where is the source of your bees and what strain(s) are they?
I started 14 years ago with Italian / Russian cross and have continued to graft my own queens. I have grown from 2 colonies to running over 250 in South-Central PA. We carefully select our breeder stock and also control our drone selection as well.
Where do the bees overwinter?
Pennsylvania and Georgia
Do the bees spend the whole season in your home location? If not, where do they go and when, and for how long?
Half of our colonies over-winter in PA and half are taken to Georgia for 3 months (January - March) to build brood for early nucs and early pollination.
Do you monitor for varroa mites? How and how often?
Yes! I do monthly washes on breeder stock and hold a threshold of 1 mite per 300 bees.
Have your hives been inspected by an inspector?
Yes, usually twice a year by my request!
Anything else? | |
I have been in the EPIQ program with Penn State, under the direction of Dr. Robyn Underwood, since its inception in 2022. I have been chosen out of the 250 participants to one of the 12 candidates to be taught hands-on intermetal insemination by Sue Coby and Corey Stevens in the Spring of 2023. I hope to be able to offer I.I. queens in the near future. I also have the University of North Carolina bee lab, under the direction of Dr. David Tarpy, score our queens for us. This allows us to know where we need to improve, and they provide a non-bias rating of our queens. |
