What characteristics do you use to select your breeding stock?
Winter Survival, Low mite counts, productivity, gentleness
Where is the source of your bees and what strain(s) are they?
I have used mostly Russian stock for my apiary as I have tried them all and they seem to do best in our Northern Climate and for mites. My queens mate with whatever is around. I have a couple of mating yards far from other beekeepers, hoping to get feral drones to mate with my bees. I am very happy with my results.
Where do the bees overwinter?
All my bees spend winter near the Indian River area. I don't move them.
Do the bees spend the whole season in your home location? If not, where do they go and when, and for how long?
I have several bee yards within 30 miles. I do bring most of my bees to my home yard in Indian River for the winter.
Do you monitor for varroa mites? How and how often?
I do monitor for varroa, Summer and Fall. As a result of Russian bees dealing with the mites and because I aggressively split colonies in the spring and late summer, I haven't had mites above treatment thresholds for a few years with the odd exception. I have been treating with formic acid or thymol once per year in the late summer, more as a comfort for myself than for their need.
Have your hives been inspected by an inspector?
No | |
Anything else? (e.g. describe your operation)
Depending on when you read this I have anywhere from 50- 100 colonies of bees. My operation is mostly for making nucs to sell locally, but I also produce a good amount of honey. I do make and sell queens but going forward I may use those exclusively for nucs instead of selling them individually. I usually offer queen cells for sale throughout the month of June. |
