| Mutts based on survivor stock that is reasonably gentle and produces honey (50+lbs/yr). I use oxalic, formic, and thymol; swiffer sheets and oil for beetles; feed as needed during a dearth and overwinter if light; and I open mate queens. I am developing a new isolated yard well removed from other beekeepers that will be devoted to only various hygienic strains but with the same overall management as described above (except no or minimal mite treatments and removing high mite count colonies from that yard). I will use a reasonably strong selection coefficient and only breed from the top 10% using a multifactorial score based on low might count, good behavior, and honey production. | |
