What characteristics do you use to select your breeding stock? | |
The queens can be best described as "Michigan mutts". When the apiaries were first established packages with Italian queens were purchased. The apiaries are self-sustaining with yearly growth through splits and OTS queen rearing. The queens have all been open mated in apiaries located in Jackson and Hillsdale Counties. Starting in 2025 VSH queens are being brought in to improve hygenic behavior (UBeeO monitoring). Nuc purchasers will have the option of purchasing a nuc with either an overwintered queen or a current year VSH queen. |
