What characteristics do you use to select your breeding stock?
Survivability, mite counts and Honey production.

Purdue Ankle Biters crossed with Michigan Mutts. I've had 100% overwintering success with these gals for the last several years (knock on wood for this year).
Where do the bees overwinter?
Lexington, Michigan | |
Do the bees spend the whole season in your home location? If not, where do they go and when, and for how long?
They stay home. | |

I do monitor for varroa by the alchohol wash process and observing natural mite drop throughout summer and fall. I alternatly use Formic Pro and Oxolic Vapor depending on weather and brood presence.
